What do young people 18-25 in NZ and Australia need to know about the law of the land to keep them out of trouble and give them the protection they need? I am working on a presentation to such a group and i am interested in views on what i should cover.
That’s a great idea Jennie. I am in that age bracket myself, and I find that people my age are always interested in how the law affects their employment, since many of us are working and often without as much knowledge and protection as people who have been in the workplace for longer. There are so many issues within that particular topic itself. I think it would be really helpful if your presentation covered what particular procedures employers should be going through when deciding whether to dismiss/make redundant an employee. Also, some advice for young people on how to handle such a situation professionally if it should ever happen to them.
ReplyDeleteAnother area where young people can easily get into trouble is the internet. It would be great if you could point out some areas where people need to be especially careful (e.g. defamation, cyber-bullying).
My last suggestion would be to cover relationships. While it may not seem so relevant to people in the 18-25 age range, there are still quite a few of us who are or have been in relationships lasting at least 3 years. Sure, perhaps we haven’t amassed as much wealth/property as older people, but our relationships are more likely to break up, and we’re less likely to seek the advice of a lawyer. Some simple advice on what being in a de facto relationship entails and how young people can protect themselves in the event of a separation. Relevant factors could be ownership of joint vehicles, pets, etc
